Luma Jasim is an Iraqi/ American interdisciplinary artist who will be performing in collaboration with musician Ryan Garrett. Luma will open her show with a music piece created by Iraqi musician, Ali Assim.
In her art, Luma explores the relationship of different concepts within today's political climate, drawing from past experiences through her practice. She uses the personal to address politics and activate the viewer's curiosity.
Jasim is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design, The New School, NY. She was recently awarded The MAP Fund Fellowship to create “Between Here And There: I am Homeless,” a performance based on the story of her experiences in Iraq and later her immigration and acculturation. In 2021, she received The Alexa Rose Foundation Fellowship to create a short documentary chronicling her experiences in Iraq up to the U.S. invasion in 2003. She also received The Juror Merit Award for The 2020 Idaho Triennial, Boise Art Museum.
Luma has completed many artist residencies and fellowships, including the MDOCS Storytellers' Institute fellowship at Skidmore College in Saratoga Spring, NY (2019), Yaddo Residency in Saratoga Spring, ID (2018), The MASS MoCA Residency in North Adams, MA (2017), and The AAF (The American Austrian Foundation)/ Seebacher Prize for Fine Arts, Summer Academy in Hohensalzburg Fortress, Austria (2017). In 2018, her work "Frozen Roots" was shortlisted for The Tenth Passion For Freedom London Arts Festival. In 2024, she will be an Artist in Resident at The Common Well in Garden City, February through April.
Luma's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Ryan Garrett is an educator and independent musician. He holds Master's degree in both philosophy and Teaching. His interests lie in taking traditional song structure and imbuing it with improvisational noise and abstract tones and sound. This will be Luma and Ryan’s third live improvised collaboration.
