Matthew and Brandon started the original Actors Workout in 2014 with a small group of like-minded Boise film professionals who set to address the lack of opportunities in the Treasure Valley to practice film-specific acting in a group setting. During a Workout session, actors will cover every aspect of booking and working on a film set, starting with the audition process and how to prep for an audition, how to make adjustments during a callback, how to analyze a script and make strong character choices, and how to rehearse and shoot a scene with a scene partner under simulated set conditions.

Matthew Melton

Matthew got his start in 2003 as a Theater Arts major at Boise State University and later moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he studied improv/sketch comedy under Second City alumnus Keli Semelsburger at Charlotte Comedy Theater while performing with the Carolina Actors Studio Theater. He later moved to L.A., where he performed in national commercials, sketch comedy troupes, and regional theater while studying film acting with Alex D’Lerma’s Cinema Gym of North Hollywood.

Since his return to Idaho in 2012, Matthew has worked as both a film and stage actor, appearing in award-winning short films and commercials as well as performing on stage with local and regional theater companies such as Boise Contemporary Theater, HomeGrown Theatre, and Treasure Valley Children’s Theater. He has taught youth and adult acting workshops for Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Boise Contemporary Theater, and Treasure Valley Children’s Theater. Matthew also conducts storytelling workshops as a guide with Story Story Night for organizations such as the Idaho Laugh Fest, the Idaho Office of Refugees, and Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

Brandon Freeman

Brandon Freeman is a twenty-year veteran of independent filmmaking, as well as being a media producer for everything from non-profits to large commercial production companies.

Early in his career as a filmmaker, he was mentored by several trained actors in understanding what performers need (and don't need) from a director on set.  In 2014, he joined the original Actors Workout as a resource for directing and filming performances in class, providing feedback from a film director's perspective.

In addition to directing and assisting with the Actors Workout, Brandon has also pursued his own training as an actor under April Matson's PLATFORM class in Boise, 2017-2019. While not his primary career focus, Brandon has an understanding from both sides of the camera, and in the editing room, on what makes or breaks a performance.

Brandon is excited to aid in the return of The Actors Workout, and foster a new generation of acting talent for the Treasure Valley and beyond.
